Cycle of Hope
Flourish Alozie was born in 2005 in Lagos, Nigeria. She moved to the US at 12 years old where she proceeded to further her education at the University of California, Irvine. Alozie uses her photographs as a medium of storytelling, taking inspiration from emotions felt by struggling young adults and turning it into art that is truly appreciated. Through the use of a camera, scenery changes, and outfit changes, Alozie successfully depicts the passage of time. Via her titles, Alozie provides subtle hints regarding the meaning of each photograph, guiding the viewers to appropriate conclusions as to the meaning of her work.
Although Alozie generously reveals her intentions, there remains ample room for speculation of the meaning of each photograph. Alozie often relies on her previous images to provide context needed to give meaning to her next image. She uses editing softwares to create her desired lighting and fixes any imperfections in her work, ensuring that only her best is presented. Her use of expression, paired with a visual decline in the subject's well-being, allows the viewers to empathize with the work. Through empathy, Alozie forces the viewers to experience an unavoidable fear that is relatable in nature. Viewers have no choice but to ponder on the reality of false hope.
Cycle of Hope contains photographs with noticeable changes in one’s mood overtime. Time is a significant tool Alozie uses to express the fickleness of hope, exposing the rapid decline in one’s light. Flourish Alozie is based in California.
